When it comes to adding a new member to the family there are a lot of things to consider. What kind of pet am I looking for, what breed(s) are compatible with my lifestyle, how much time can I dedicate to my pet etc…One thing to consider would be adopting an older pet. Older pets usually get passed up at shelters, adopting an older pet is such a wonderful thing to do, here are some reasons why:

  • Senior pets are usually already housebroken and past the destruction phase
  • Senior pets are usually already trained, but don’t worry, an old dog/cat can learn new tricks
  • You are aware of any behavioral issues and personality traits
  • Medical history is usually known
  • Older pets want to be loved and in a forever home
  • You are saving a life!

Something else to keep in mind, if you are up for it, is adopting a hospice pet. I adopted a dog with terminal cancer and although I only had him in my life for a short time, it was wonderful. He was happy and grateful for his last days being cared for and surrounded by love. With one decision we changed his life forever, and made his last days on this earth peaceful ones. Adopting a hospice pet is more work and dedication and may require more financial commitment to manage terminal disease but it is one of the most rewarding things that you can do.

So next time you see the cute puppy or kitten, take a stroll by the senior pets and see if a connection is made.
