Arthritis is a progressive deterioration of the cartilage in joints of dogs and cats. Pain and lameness develop secondary to joint dysfunction and muscle atrophy. This condition is progressive and can affect the quality of life of your pet, but there are steps that you can take to help keep your pet comfortable.
* Maintain a lean body weight
* Joint supplements, such as glucosamine and chondroitin (this works at the cellular level and so is not used for pain relief, it is used to maintain a healthy joint)
* Omega 3 fish oils
* Other dietary supplements, ask your holistic veterinarian for specific recommendations
* Homeopathy
* Physical rehabilitation
* Acupuncture
* Chiropractic care with someone who is trained and certified in animal chiropractic
* Regular controlled exercise such as leash walking
* Soft, padded bedding
* Raised food and water dishes (elbow height) for larger dogs that may have difficultly lowering their head to the ground to eat or drink
* Non-skid floor surfaces
* A ramp for entering and leaving a vehicle, make sure the ramp has a non skid surface and you train your dog to use it
* Special harnesses to assist with mobility
There are other things that can be done to help maintain your pet’s mobility and comfort as they age.
