With the Fourth of July around the corner many pet lovers rush to find ways to help keep their pets calm during the fireworks celebrations. Here are a few tips so that everyone stays happy and safe.

Here are some signs to look for in a stressed dog:

  • Hiding
  • Ears pinned back
  • Tucking the tail
  • Gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting or diarrhea
  • Inappetence
  • Avoiding eye contact or looking away
  • Lip smacking or drooling
  • Trying to run away

Safety tips:

  • We know that you want to celebrate with your pets but don’t take your dog to firework displays
  • Keep pets inside and have someone stay with them if possible
  • Put them in a room with classical music or the TV on to help drown out the noise
  • Make sure that all windows, doors and gates are closed and secure and if they need to go outside then go out with them
  • Make sure your pet has an ID tag and/or micro-chipped with up up to date information

Calming aids:

  • Use pet approved calming supplements, check with your veterinarian ahead of time to see what they recommend for your pet
  • Utilize a “Thundershirt”, be sure to acclimate them to it prior to using it on the day of fireworks, just be sure that it does not overheat your pet since it is “clothes”
  • Gentle petting and letting them know that they are safe
  • In the event that your pet has severe reactions to the fireworks, consult with your veterinarian regarding medications that can be used as needed

Have fun and be safe!!!

Happy 4th
